Lake Arrowhead was first settled by Europeans who moved to the area as employees of the logging industry. Chinese work crews dug a tunnels through out the San Bernardino mountain in the 1800´s which connected to Lake Arrowhead. A very narrow steam train ran through Running Springs and Grass Valley along what we now call "Rim of the World" highway. The tower standing in the middle of Lake Arrowhead is 195 feet high and is used as an outlet for water to the desert below.
Willow Woods is a charming community known for its local shopping and the log cabin building techniques which date back to the early 1900´s. Many tour companies located through out the United States have chosen to include Lake Arrowhead on their itineraries due to the high level of visitor interest.
For visitors looking for a one-on-one experience with nature, the San Bernardino Mountains offer a WONDERFUL display of over 2,000 species of flowers and close to 400 species of various animals.
During the late 1970´s, the Lake Arrowhead business district was burned completely to the ground only to be rebuilt to its current state. The only building still in existence that survived the fire is the pavilion standing in the center of the village.
Most of the private land which surrounds Lake Arrowhead has today been divided into separate residential lots. The lots location in Arrowhead Woods now totals approximately 10,000 lots and with ownership of each residential lot the owner receives the right to use of Lake Arrowhead. These residential lots have been improved with the homes constructed ranging from a simple cabin to some of the most expensive homes on the market.
The Lake Arrowhead population has been known to grow close to 40,000 during its peek in the summer months when many summer home owners and vacationers move up to the mountain for a few months. The permanent population, however, is also growing rapidly from 6,300 in 1980 to the 10,000 estimated in 1992, which is a 4% annual growth rate. Assuming the 4% growth rate continues, the permanent population will be approximately 20,500 in the year 2010 and 30,000 in the year 2020.
The demographics of the Lake Arrowhead population are not well documented. There are a number of retired residents but probably not more than 20% of the population. School attendance continues to grow and it is estimated that 50% of the permanent households have children in grades K-12. Income and education levels are higher than those of surrounding communities.
Lake Arrowhead has also seen its share of the Hollywood scene as many moview have been filmed on location in the Lake Arrowhead community. Some of those movies include: Heidi, Magnificent Obsession, The American President, Space Jam and The Parent Trap.
